If you’ve ever wondered why the grass is always greener in Langford, it’s because we used to require it! By turfing the artificial grass requirement, maintenance costs have been reduced for taxpayers until it can be replaced in due time. 

Artificial grass is no longer required

In 2017, the Council of the time decided to require artificial grass instead of sod grass to lower maintenance costs. Five years later, a cost analysis indicated that the artificial grass boulevards around Langford were not only disliked by the general public, they were actually costing taxpayers more. 

By removing the requirement to install artificial grass boulevards along new developments, your tax dollars are being used more responsibly

What this means for you

When we updated the Subdivision and Servicing Bylaw 1000, we made sure that new developments were no longer required to install artificial turf, but were instead required to plant more trees. Over the long run, these small changes will have a ripple effect in growing a better tree canopy for future generations. In due time, the artificial grass will be removed and replace with sensible, more natural alternatives like the ones you already see elsewhere in Langford.
