Growing a greener Langford  

In an increasingly warming world, urban tree canopy is a matter of social and environmental equity. Historically, Langford’s fastest-densifying and lowest-income neighbourhoods have also been the ones with the lowest amount of tree canopy cover, leaving these residents more vulnerable to extreme heat.

To protect what we have, Langford finally joined our regional neighbours by implementing our first-ever Tree Protection Bylaw. Moving forward, our comprehensive Urban Forest Management Plan will serve as our long-term roadmap—ensuring that as Langford grows, we grow a greener, healthier, and more livable community for everyone, no matter what neighbourhood they call home.

What this means for you

We are growing Langford’s urban forest by adding more trees to public parks and using our Official Community Plan to protect forested areas from development. We are also protecting mature trees on private land. Under our Tree Protection Bylaw, removing any tree over 20 cm in diameter requires an arborist assessment and a city permit. This policy does bring new steps and maintenance expenses for local homeowners, but it ensures we are successfully preserving our urban canopy and holding major developments to a shared standard of environmental responsibility.
