Langford previously sold off millions of dollars in amenity lands to help keep taxes low during Covid. This new bylaw prevents that practice, permanently protecting 209 acres as public parks for our community’s future.
Many of your favourite greenspaces are now protected forever
Langford was known for collecting land through development, but didn’t always get around to creating bylaws to protect these amenity contributions as public parks. In fact, millions of dollars in amenity lands were sold off 2020 and 2021 to keep property taxes low in the short term. In April 2026, Council adopted the new Park Dedication Bylaw, which officially protects 90 parcels of land, totalling over 200 acres, as permanent parkland.
What this means for you
As our city grows, this bylaw ensures that the spaces where you play, walk your dog, and gather with neighbours remain untouched. By moving these areas from "amenity lands" to dedicated parks, we have established a permanent safeguard.
Now, future councils cannot sell or repurpose these lands without broad public consent through a referendum or Alternative Approval Process (AAP).
